You have saved us
You have raised us up with You
You have saved us
Called us out and made us new
Yeah

Who am I that You would know me
Who are we to You Lord
You have shown Your love and mercy
We are strangers no more
We are daughters we are sons
All because of what You’ve done

Verse 2
Turn our hearts from earthly idols
Turn our eyes to You Lord
Only You can heal what’s broken
Only You can restore
We are daughters we are sons
All because of what You’ve done

Over the past few years I have been literally sucked into the world of internet entrepreneurship. I started blogging back in 2009 and it didn’t take long for me to discover the world of online business and internet marketing. I was hooked. Ever since I have tried to quit but have not been successful. About 6 months ago I decided to succumb to the relentless pull and admit that perhaps this is a passion that is coming from within that I should pruse and cultivate (responsibly, of course).

Here is a brief list of online ventures I have launched since I set up my blog.

Full Sites

benchilcote.net
YOU ARE HERE.  I originally started blogging at blogger.com but soon switched to a hosted wordpress blog. Eventually I started paying for a hosting company to host my own domain and set up benchilcote.com as my fully-owned website. Benchilcote.com recently became benchilcote.net when I forgot to have my domain name auto-renew. Someone with their own internet business strategies snatched it up to create a junk site. He offered to sell it back to me for $200 (or something like that) but I decided to expand my empire and go from a .com to a .net.

writechristiansongs.com
This is a site I created for songwriters. It has a songwriting club that currently exists on Facebook. I have a lot of ideas and future plans for this – namely, to grow it to become a go-to resource for online songwriters world-wide. So far so good.

beavercreekchristian.org
This is our church website. I brought our website into a 21st century platform (wordpress) from a clunky CMS designed for churches. Kudos to Brent Thurston for his previous work on the church site. I re-created the site from the ground up and it went live in July 2012 complete with a new church logo.

Review Sites

These sites were created to promote products I use in order to offer information to others who may be intersted in using them, and as a way to make a commission off the product/service sales.

tubetoolboxreview.com
tubeassistreview.com

Niche Sites

These niche sites have been experiments in passive income. They were created after doing careful keyword research and are monetized both by Google Adsense and affiliate products. So far I’m getting pretty good traffic and enough income to help cover the basic “business expenses” of all I’m working on.

I made this for my wife on her birthday. There are a number of mistakes but I had a very small window of time to learn and record the song in secret. I was somewhat familiar with the song already so that helped but the specific background parts were a bit tricky. As you can probably tell, I was looking at the sheet music – which was about 8 pages long. If I had time I would have relaid a few of the tracks. I spent about an hour recording all the parts. This included learning some of the notes as well!

Technical Notes

All the video was orginally recorded in Quicktime using the webcam and usb mic. I first recorded the lead while listening to the original in my hearphones. This gave me the foundation and kept me in tune! I then laid the bass part the same way. I then exported the audio for those two tracks, imported them into Logic (multi-track software) and lined them up. Next I recorded the baritone part while listening to the bass and lead from Logic – in order to lock the harmonies with myself. I then exported the baritone audio and brought that into Logic. From here, I repeated this process with the remaining 3 background parts until it was finished.

I then pulled all the video into ScreenFlow which makes it super easy to lay out and line up. I had to sync up all the videos so the parts were in time together. I adjusted the volume levels and added a bit of reverb, trimmed the ends, added some titles and that was it!

What I used to make the video:
Camera: Logitech HD Pro C920
Mic: Blue Yeti USB Mic
Software: Logic, Quicktime Pro & ScreenFlow
Computer: MacBook Pro

Happy New Year!

In fall of 2009 I went through a significant spiritual awakening – coming to a deeper understanding of who am I am why I am on Earth. That epiphany gave me the needed fuel to start blogging. 3 years later, I have left my small footprint online. In 2013 I will continue to wiggle my foot to make the print a bit wider and deeper.  Here are some updates.

.COM to .NET

Funny story. Last month I went to log in to my website to find it didn’t exist any more. Upon a frantic investigation, I found out some guy in some foreign country was now the registrant of the domain benchilcote.com. When I contacted godaddy.com about what appeared to be a hacked account, they reported back that my domain had expired and I would have to contact the new registrant directly. Huh?! So, I wrote the guy and asked to buy it back. He said he’d be happy to sell it back to me for $150 – in order to break even. I counter offered $50 but he said no deal. So… I moved my site to benchilcote.net, which I’m starting to like. It’s more fitting to what I’m doing online anyway – expanding my brand to a network of websites and other ventures.

The only problem is I’ve lost a bit of momentum and page rank with the search engines. But I’ll get that back with time.

writechristiansongs.com

The WCS Songwriting Club and writechristiansongs.com has continued to steadily grow. All in 2012 it was born, faded away, then made a comeback. It is now growing with self-sustaining momentum and currently sits at at  750 “likes”. I plan to expand what I’m doing as the “curator” of writechristiansongs.com. Possible projects include an ebook, community forum, interview videos, and even a paid membership area. I hope to continue building the WCS Songwriting Club with the goal to become the premier community for Christian songwriters worldwide. Yeah!

Internet Marketing

I have officially stepped into the world of Affiliate Marketing.  If you don’t know, affiliate marketing is promoting someone else’s product or service and then receiving commission off any sales.  Basically, one has a product to promote, creates a website on a similar subject with a lot of helpful content, drives targeted traffic to the site, and gets people to click on the offer to buy.

I have always been interested in owning my own business and this is a way to do it online without the need for a lot of investment.  I have launched a few small ventures and will continue to grow them over time in hopes to create some passive income.  I have a handful of sites in the making and a few that are up and running including  www.connorstest.com,  www.logitechhdproc920review.com and www.powerpointipad.org.  These sites are all less than 2 months old and are getting organic traffic.  I’m new at it but learning a lot and having a blast.

Music

I haven’t made the time to sit down and write too much lately. From Fall 2012 through the end of the year, family and work life really pressed in and squeezed a lot of creative time out. I would like to see some new music in 2013 and maybe some new studio recordings. I have enough work to put a full album together. We’ll see! Until then, In Good Hands continues to get 100-200 views a day on YouTube and I’m grateful for the blessings it has been to families all over the world!

Jars of Clay is one of my all-time favorite bands – A band who one music critic said, and I paraphrase, “continues to reinvent themselves every album”. I have shared this song, Benediction, (from a more recent album, “Shelter”) a few times for special church gatherings. It is truly a great benediction.

To create the video, I, for the first time, utilized a great piece of software called ScreenFlo.  Using that with Quicktime Pro and my trusty Blue Yeti mic, I was able to put this video together very quickly.  I hope to do more multi-ben vids in the future.  Enjoy!

Benediction

Go into the world showing how much He loves you
Walk in the world in merciful ways
He loves you He loves you

Emmanuel on earth

Yours is the body the hands and the feet
And Yours are the eyes to look compassionately
To bless you and me bless you and me
He will bless you and me

Go into the world showing how much He loves you
Walk in the world in meaningful ways
He loves you He loves you
Emmanuel on earth God with us on earth

This song was written for the August Songwriting Challenge for the WCS Songwriting Club. Honestly, I waited until the last minute and didn’t have a lot of time so it feels like a rough draft for me! It definitely has potential 🙂  The song is basically about being frustrated with this life.  Dealing with sin, dealing with fear, pain, and hardship.  It’s a song about hope.  Real hope.  The hope for those who are in Christ – who have a perfect eternity that is being preserved for them.  Its not a hope that takes away the hard things of life, but a hope that empowers us to endure it.

When I Get There

Ben Chilcote

These eyes
See both dark and light
How will I get through this life

This mouth
Speaks both truth and lies
How will I get through this night

Don’t know how long but
This night will be ending
I will hold on
Hope is waiting for me

When I get there
Day consumes the night
When I get there
Darkness turns to light
When I get there
Only joyful cries
Goodbye to goodbyes
When I get there

These feet
Stumble through the night
How will I get through this life

These eyes
Are fixed on Jesus face
To run the race and fight the fight

Don’t know – how long but
This night will be ending
I will – hold on
Hope is waiting for me

CHORUS

Hold on to the truth we claim
Hold on to the only Name
Hold on through the race we run
With eyes on the Faithful One
Death’s not the end
This night will be ending
Hold on – Hold on
Hope is waiting for me

CHORUS

This was a tricky song to pull off. I had to figure out how to do the dual lead part in the chorus. It’s a great, high-energy song!

Where The Spirit Of The Lord Is

Chris Tomlin | Christy Nockels | Nathan Nockels

We know where the Spirit of the Lord is
(Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty)
We know living in Your freedom
(Living in Your freedom we see Your glory)
We know where the Spirit of the Lord is
(Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty)
We’re Yours and Yours is the kingdom
(We are Yours)
Yours is the kingdom
(Yours is the kingdom)

You are the fire through the night
You are the flame that burns inside
We need Your presence more than anything

More than just a song to sing
More than words and offerings
We need Your presence more than anything

And You’re all that we want
You’re all that we need
You’re all that we want
You’re all that we need

We know where the Spirit of the Lord is
(Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty)
We know living in Your freedom
(Living in Your freedom we see Your glory)
We know where the Spirit of the Lord is
(Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty)
We’re Yours and Yours is the kingdom
(We are Yours)
Yours is the kingdom
(Yours is the kingdom)
Yours is the kingdom
(Yours is the kingdom)

You call us closer to Your heart
Lead us Lord to where You are
We need Your presence more than anything

We know where the Spirit of the Lord is
(Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty)
We know where the Spirit of the Lord is
(Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty)
